Ripley’s Believe It or Not! began as a newspaper series that evolved into various other forms of media (radio, TV, comics and books) and then a chain of popular tourist museums that are now all over the world. The theme behind Ripley’s is the unusual, bizarre, and rare finds throughout the world.

The Amazing Ripley’s Believe It Or Not slot game may actually be its own rare find with two special Wilds, a Mystery Pick Bonus that awards one of 3 bonus games, a Tally/Zap feature, Free Peek feature, 2nd Chance Card Bonus and a Jackpot. Let’s take a look at what this new slot has to offer and see if it’s too good to be true.

Overview: Amazing Ripley’s Believe It or Not Slots

Enduring for over 100 years, and constantly adding to their collection of artifacts and outlets, Ripley’s is an iconic name and a good fit for a slot game. This slot version of Ripley’s theme has a Las Vegas backdrop, featuring the Luxor pyramid, the MGM and Stratosphere hotels, the Linq Ferris Wheel, and the ever-present palm trees that line the Strip. The reels themselves have a blue-and-white stripe effect, with the Progressive Jackpot tallies on the right side.

The timing is significant, as the game is being released in concurrence with a new TV show, premiering on the Travel Channel on June 9, 2019. This is the third time the weird and wonderful is hitting the market, with the first in the 1940s with Ripley himself as host, then again in the 1980s with various hosts (including Jack Palance), and two animated series in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The slot machine game itself has a lot to offer, as noted above, making every spin exciting.

Who will Amazing Ripley’s Believe It or Not slots appeal to?

Well, with over 80 museums worldwide (including one on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City) and an estimated attendance of 12 million visitors per year, it’s a good bet that people who love the theme will naturally be attracted to the slot, which features many of Ripley’s museum finds in both reel symbols and in the background framework of the game.

Amazing Ripley’s Believe It or Not slot machine also has a nice range of betting options, from 50 cents up to $250, appealing to all levels of players. And fans of slots with multiple bonus features will really love the game, given that there are so many available.

Gameplay: Amazing Ripley’s Online Slot

This slot plays out with 5 reels and 27 base paylines. Your base symbols include 7, 77, 777, $, martini glass with chips and die, bell, square plum, square orange, square cherries, and R Logo Wild. Special symbols include the Rocket, Mystery Pick Bonus, Wheel Bonus, Vegas Spins, and Free Peek.

You begin by setting your bet denomination from 1 cent to $1 (which is multiplied by 50, making your base bet 50 cents to $50). You then set your Bet Multiplier from 1 to 5. So total bet can range from 50 cents to $250. Then you have the option of using the Spin button for single spins or the Auto Play feature, which allows from 10 to 500 automatic spins.

You’ll also notice to the right of the reels the available Jackpots, of which there are 4: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond. The amount of these jackpots corresponds to your bet amount. So, the higher you bet, the bigger the jackpots. For a base 50 cent bet, they range from $20 to $500, while a max bet of $250 brings that range up to $10,000 to $250,000.

Additional features

In addition to your standard Wild, there are Extra Wilds and Locking Wilds. The Extra Wilds is put into play when a Rocket lands on reel 3. One to 3 of your existing symbols will be converted into Wilds, which can help in making winning paylines. Locking Wild occur during the Free Spins Bonus. Any regular Wild will lock into place and stay for the duration of your spins.

There is also a Mystery Pick Bonus, which is triggered by 3 or more Mystery Pick Bonus symbols. You are awarded picks based on the number of symbols you get:

  • 3 Mystery Pick symbols: You get to pick 1 of 3 objects. They contain Bronze Wheel Bonus, Trivia Bonus (worth 1,000x-1,5000x your bet) and a Vegas Spins Bonus (7 spins).
  • 4 Mystery Pick symbols: Pick until 2 bonuses are played. Choices here are Silver Wheel Bonus, Trivia Bonus (worth 2000x), Vegas Spins Bonus (9 spins) and a 250x bet multiplier.
  • 5 Mystery Pick symbols: Pick until 3 bonuses are played. Choices here are Gold Wheel Bonus, Trivia Bonus (worth 4000x), Vegas Spins Bonus (12 spins) and a 750x bet multiplier.

Special features: Amazing Ripley’s Believe It or Not

Wheel Bonus

This bonus allows you to spin the Wheel, which can provide you with one of the four Jackpots, a Free Spins Bonus, Trivia Bonus, monetary award, or advancement to the next level on the Wheel. There are 4 wheels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond. You start at Bronze and can work your way up. Awards and bonuses increase as you advance to each higher reel.

Vegas Spins Bonus

Available through either the Mystery Pick Bonus or the Wheel Bonus. You’ll get between 7 and 12 free spins, based on the number of Mystery Pick Bonus symbols, and between 7 and 15 based on which level of the Wheel awards it.

Trivia Bonus

Available through either the Mystery Pick Bonus or the Wheel Bonus. You’ll start with a trivia question and 4 possible answers. The sooner you pick the right answer the larger your bonus will be. Your bonus also increases based on the how many Mystery Pick symbols you have or whether you land on the Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond Reel. During this Bonus you may encounter the Tally or Zap features. The Tally feature occurs randomly, telling you’re the statistics of previous players 1st guesses from the answers given. Similarly, the Zap feature occurs randomly, but it automatically zaps 1 wrong answer, giving you a leg up and guaranteeing you a payout.

What works?

Multiple bonuses

There’s a really nice variety of bonuses in this game, mixing it up every time you get to spin the Wheel. The Trivia Bonus is fun (although it’s terribly easy to cheat and Google an answer) and payouts are decent, but it’s over rather quickly. The Vegas Spins Bonus is a fairly traditional free spins bonus, but the Locking Wild can make for some great payouts. The Wheel Bonus can be over quickly or go on for some time, depending on how many levels you advance and the bonuses you get (including a Jackpot).

Jackpot feature

Jackpot payouts are actually pretty decent. Not Progressive Jackpot good, but based on your bet, they seem hefty. On a $25 bet, the Bronze Jackpot is $1,000, the Silver is $2,500, the Gold is $7,500 and the Diamond is $25,000.

Auto Play Feature

Amazing Ripley’s slot game features an Autoplay feature, providing players with between 10 and 500 spins at a time. While not every player uses Autoplay, those that do really miss it when it’s omitted from a game.

What doesn’t?

Return-to-player percentage

The RTP on this game is 93.45%, significantly lower than the typical 9% to 96% we’ve been seeing on new games.

Too many symbols

There are a large number of symbols (15), which is significantly higher than most slots employ. While some are only available in the bonus games, the majority are found in the base game, making it a bit difficult to achieve wins, particularly as the symbols can come stacked.

The Scores

Graphics and sound 3/5

Music is some retro swing music from the 1940s, with additional sounds made when you get wins, or are waiting on your 3rd Mystery Pick Bonus Symbol. Payouts throw up dollar signs and have a pleasant ringing sound. Bonus games are narrated, with a drum roll upon answering a Trivia Bonus question.

Graphics are clear and somewhat simplistic, but given the Vegas theme, the Ripley’s Logo Wild has neon lights that alternate when they are involved in a payline win, as does the BIG WIN sign that appears after…a big win.

Originality & creativity 4/5

While it isn’t the first Ripley’s-themed game to hit the market, this one is slanted more toward traditional players, with its Vegas theme and old-school symbols. The use of multiple bonuses, trivia, various Wilds, and a 2nd Chance Card and Sneak Peek feature (which we never witnessed), bring a lot of originality to this version.

Play value 3/5

While the RTP is low on this game, there are a fair number of bonuses to explore and have some fun with, as well as multiple jackpots.

Jackpot potential 3/5

Bigger wins are very achievable through the variety of bonuses. The big Diamond Jackpot of $250,000 an only be achieved with a max bet of $250 and some luck on the Wheel.

Repeat play 3/5

Given all of the features, this is definitely a repeat game, unless you find yourself on the lower RTP end, getting only small, occasional wins and no bonuses—which can realistically happen.

Total score: 16/25

Overall, this is a pretty fun game. I looked forward to the Trivia Bonus and testing my knowledge of obscure things (which often failed me), and was able to test out all the bonus features in a fairly short amount of time.
