New York Islanders Making Return Trip To NHL Stanley Cup Semifinals Versus Defending Champs

They have been a Stanley Cup playoff Wonderdog, authoring two come-from-behind series upsets and now facing the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning in hockey’s Final Four.

Initial Islanders, Lightning series odds

DraftKings Sportsbook has Tampa Bay at -305 as the series moneyline favorite.

The Islanders odds were at +255 early Friday evening (up from +180).

William Hill boosted the Islanders to +275.

The Vegas Knights are prohibitive favorites in the other Cup semifinal, opening at -500 against the Montreal Canadiens.

The gritty and determined Isles overcame two-to-one series deficits against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins to reach this stage.

In both instances, they pulled even at home in Game 4, survived a Game 5 nail-biter (a double-overtime win in Pittsburgh, a one-goal win in Boston after coughing up a three-goal lead), and a Game 6 home clinch before a raucous crowd.

In the 2020 playoffs, The Lightning beat the Islanders in six games, inside a bubble. Crowds are back and they make a difference.

So why did the Isles reached the NHL’s final four this time around?

The Islanders have deceptive team speed and outworked the Penguins and Bruins for rebound opportunities in the slot. They were also opportunistic regarding turnovers leading to quick scoring chances.

Looking ahead to the series versus the Lightning, bettors can find value with the number of games it will last.

Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Tampa Bay defense have been deceivingly strong. Although the Lightning are associated with offensive prowess, Vasilevskiy authored two shutouts in the first two rounds.

The Lightning allowed just nine goals in the series against the Carolina Hurricanes, less than two per game.

The Islanders have gotten goalie Semyon Varlamov to practically stand on his head. Varlamov played the last five games of the Bruins series after Ilya Sorokin was beaten in the opener.

Both teams can win with good offensive firepower. But can the Islanders win the 2-1 games if this becomes a defensive series?

Timing is important regarding best odds.

Early in the series or early in the formation of a new trend produces good post-season betting prices.

The books, for instance, weren’t fooled by Carolina finishing ahead of Tampa Bay in the regular-season standings. William Hill had Tampa Bay -135 to open the series, despite Carolina having a home-ice advantage.
